Ayuo is a composer, mult-instrumentalist, songwriter, film-scorer, artist, poet and lyricist. Ayuo helped form Fushitsusha with Keiji Haino in the late 70s. He also made 3 albums in the 80s for the Midi, Inc label, two of which were collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto. Later, in the early 2000’s, he put out a series of cds on the Tzadik label run by John Zorn. He also made numerous albums with Peter Hammill of Van Der Graaf Generator.
Ayuo, in conversation, discusses his life growing up in New York City, moving to Tokyo in his teens, where he had a chance encounter with a Midi, Inc label executive, and other topics.
Please check out this interview. I was interviewed by Tristan Teshigahara Pollack, a musician living in Brooklyn, NYC, who writes and performs experimental music. His grandfather, Hiroshi Teshigahara, was the director of several great films made in Japan from the 1950s to 1990s such as "Woman in the Dunes" and "The Face of Another".
I was amazed at how much Tristan knew of my music. This interview is in English. (Only the introduction is in Japanese.) You can hear excerpts from 15 songs that I made from the late 1970s to my most recent CD "Outside Society" released last year. Several recordings I made in England and NYC can also be heard. There is quite an eclecticism in the different types of music here, and you may be interested in some of the stories I tell.
